Kitchen sinks - not just a functional element, but also an important part of your kitchen’s aesthetic design. They affect not only everyday convenience but also the overall look of the space. Today’s market offers a wide variety of options - from minimalist stainless steel sinks to modern stone composite models – so it’s important to know what to pay attention to when choosing a sink for your home.
Identify Your Main Needs
Before starting your search for a kitchen sink, ask yourself a few questions:
- How often do you cook at home?
- Do you frequently wash large plates, pots, or baking trays?
- What size countertop or space do you have available for a sink?
The size and shape of the sink greatly affect its practical convenience: a larger, deeper sink makes daily tasks easier, while a more compact one is ideal for smaller kitchens or homes that aren’t used full-time
Choose the Right Material
The material of a sink is one of the most important factors when choosing a kitchen sink, as it determines its durability, maintenance, and appearance.
Stainless Steel
- The most popular choice due to its practicality.
- Resistant to impacts and easy to clean.
- Choose steel with at least 18% chromium and 10% nickel to reduce the risk of rust.
- A textured surface helps hide scratches and watermarks.
- Drawback: stainless steel sinks tend to be noisier than stone composite or ceramic sinks.
Stone Composite (Granite/Composite)
- Resistant to temperature changes, scratches, and stains.
- Available in various colors and textures, making it ideal for modern interiors and easy to match with different styles.
- Often comes with a long warranty due to the high quality of the material.
One of the largest sink manufacturers, Elleci, divides this material into two groups based on composition: Keratek and Granitek. Keratek is made of 80% granite, acrylic, and nano particles, resulting in a silky, extremely smooth surface with rich, vibrant colors. Sinks made from Keratek come with a 20-year warranty. Granitek, on the other hand, is composed only of granite and acrylic (without nano particles), producing more muted shades and a natural stone-like texture. These sinks come with a 10-year warranty. When choosing, it’s worth considering the final look you want for your kitchen.
Ceramic
- An aesthetically pleasing and classic choice.
- Preserves a traditional look in the kitchen, but ceramic is heavier and can be more susceptible to impacts.
Installation method
1. Undermount (mounted from below)
2. Flush-mounted (level with the countertop)
3. Top-mounted (mounted from above the countertop)
In modern kitchens, undermount sinks are often preferred. They create a seamless countertop surface, are easier to clean, and give a minimalist look that doesn’t clutter the space.
Countertop-mounted sinks are also popular. They are easier to install but have a visible rim. Keep in mind that if you choose a flush-mounted or undermount sink, the countertop material must be water-resistant. In such cases, particleboard (also known as chipboard or MDF) countertops are not suitable.
And, of course, the most traditional sink installation method- top-mounted - is still very popular. It will likely remain a favorite because sinks mounted from above the countertop are the easiest to install and maintain.
Size, Shape, and Style
Shape
Rectangular sinks provide plenty of space for washing.
Round or oval sinks feel cozier and look more appealing in smaller spaces.
Size
The larger the sink, the more practical it is, especially if you frequently wash large dishes.
Make sure the sink fits both the countertop size and the layout of the cabinets.
Style
Colors and surface finishes can be coordinated with your kitchen cabinetry or overall interior theme-from modern neutral tones to bold accent colors.
Additional Sink Accessories - For Greater Comfort
Modern sinks can come with a variety of accessories, such as cutting boards, trays, dish racks, integrated dish holders, or soap dispensers. These solutions help save valuable countertop space and allow you to make the most of your kitchen sink.
When choosing a kitchen sink, it’s important to consider not only its appearance but also the installation method: top-mounted, flush-mounted, or undermount.
Today, the most common choice is an undermount kitchen sink. This solution is typically used in modern, minimalist interiors, where every raised detail matters.
